Last chance saloon

Written by on 27 November 2011

It’s November, and there’s almost a whole month left before Christmas, so a post all about it seems a trifle unnecessary.

However.

The last posting dates for Christmas are sneaky little beggars, prone to dash up behind you and bite you on the bum, coming as they do so much sooner than you expect.

Reasons to be cheerful, part 1?

Written by on 20 November 2011

You know how sometimes things change so slowly that it’s imperceptible and it’s only when you stop and look around that you suddenly realise how much the scenery has changed? Yeah, well, that.

A few weeks ago, a friend on facebook posted a link to the new Hyperbole and a Half post, she’s the one who wrote God of Cake, yeay! Reading the new post, probably the best description of depression I’ve ever seen, was the realisation. Oh shit, it’s happening again.

Acceptable in the 80′s (even better now)

Written by on 14 November 2011

Winter brings a whole host of new international kidswear labels to Love It Love It Love It, and there’s a distinctly retro theme going on.  If you remember wearing luxurious, warm fabrics such as velvet, velour, terry towelling and corduroy as a child, you’ll love what’s on offer.

The most recent arrival, from Denmark, is Krutter. Inspired by designer Birgitta Sonn’s memories of her own childhood, there is some serious 80′s funk going on, with soft velour jumpsuits and bright dungarees the order of the day.

12 Lessons from History

Written by on 8 November 2011

Ah Downton Abbey.  With its pretty dresses, intruige, romance and more pretty dresses, it has become a Sunday night TV staple. But don’t let the pretty dresses fool you. It’s also a grittily accurate historical documentary and searing social commentary. Whilst Downton teaches us many things, here are just a few of its most salient points, which we would all do well to note.

OMG Sybil, I’m totally gonna pull a handbrake turn in this tractor. ROFLMAO

But baby *needs* it my dear! Part 3

Written by on 21 September 2011

A mere 16 short months ago, I started a semi regular series of blog posts about the stuff you really need and don’t need when you have a baby. It has turned out to be somewhat less than semi irregular, let alone semi regular. In fact, if you found the last instalment, on feeding useful, you’re probably about to wave your baby off to college and are better placed than I am to write this post but hey, let’s press on regardless.

So. Travel. Babies need a way to get around.

The ones that got away

Written by on 11 September 2011

During the genesis of Love It Love It Love It, whilst deciding which brands to stock, I looked at well over 700 children’s clothing brands from around the world. Since launching the store, I’ve lost count but must have seen several hundred more.  Here are some* of my favourites that didn’t make the cut. What do you think – did I make the right choices?

Zutano

Zutano do a fabulous, wide range of clothes with great prints for girls and boys, many of which are unisex. Their print family concept means that it’s easy to mix and match pieces from across the range. Zutano was going to be one of the first brands stocked in Love It, but timing meant that I’d just missed their order deadline, and since then I’ve learned the hard way that import charges on clothing from the USA is so high that it’s difficult to break even on it, never mind make a profit.  Maybe one day, eh?

Tit for tat

aka The Most Random but Surprisingly Complex Competition Ever.

Many of the lovely brands we stock are so darn lovely that in addition to sending us their clothes to sell, they also send us other stuff. An eclectic mixture of stuff, and gorgeous as it is, I’m not sure what to do with it.  (Except the sweeties. I ate them.) The stock room is currently overflowing with new Autumn/Winter 2011 deliveries, and with more on the way, it’s time to make some room before a tragic colourful baby clothes avalanche disaster occurs.

So here’s the plan. Throughout September, anyone who submits a review of something they’ve bought on Love It Love It Love It will be entered in to a competition to win a delightful but undeniably fairly useless selection of stuff.

Simple pleasures

Written by on 7 September 2011

Tomorrow, Liv goes back to pre-school and this year she’ll go every morning. A major re-think of our childcare arrangements means that she’ll spend each afternoon with a childminder or my mum until I pick both girls up at the end of school.  So today is our last full day together, just the two of us.

Rather than even try and attempt to get anything done, I decided to go with the flow today and am so glad I did. We’ve been doing kid stuff; looking at the world through the eyes of someone who hasn’t been in it all that long.

We have walked a long and circuitous ‘secret’ way to the park, played on the swings before anyone else arrived and talked to the ducks. Then we got the bus in to town, sitting upstairs *and* pressing the button when we wanted to get off (we usually travel by metro, so the bus is a novelty). We mooched around in the market, examining all the creatures laid out on the fishmonger’s slab and the huge, bare beef bones discarded in front of the butcher’s stall. We boogied to the music in the CD shop and then we sat in the centre of town, drinking milkshakes and watching the people go by.

We stood and listened to a busker playing the Northumbrian pipes in the sunshine, and Liv loved watching this guy dancing in the street with his cousin to raise money so he can take his place in the Olympic bob sleigh team. We stopped for a quick chat with all the old ladies who wanted to ruffle Liv’s hair and now we’re home again.  We even managed to get some of the stuff we needed to buy.

Next we’ll make some brownies, and tomorrow everything will go back to normal……..

So you’re starting school….

Or your child is, anyway. But now September is here, there’s stuff you need to know too. Like this.

Bitch mum cliques

This one must have been invented by the Daily Mail. It just doesn’t happen.  Unlike at baby groups, after 4+ years of being a parent, the penny has dropped for virtually everyone that we’re all just muddling through, doing the best we can and none of us has the right to look down on anyone else who’s trying their best.  As there are no secrets between 4 year olds, you’ll soon have some excellent dirt on anyone who’d be daft enough to try and look down on you.  School mums are in fact pretty great.  You’ll end up stepping in for each other for pick ups and drop offs in times of need, or on a taking turns basis. You’ll suddenly know a lot more people in your local community and you’ll probably make some really cool new friends.
